Welcome to the Chinese Linguistic Society of Japan
The Chinese Linguistic Society of Japan was first founded as the “Chuugoku Gogaku Kenkyuu-kai” (The Chinese Language Society of Japan) under the leadership of the late Dr. Takeshiro Kuraishi in 1946 and changed its name in 1978. As of March 2009, it had approximately 1165 members and had published 255 issues of the journal CHUUGOKU GOGAKU (Chinese Linguistics).
The society’s activities center around its annual national meeting every autumn and the publication of CHUUGOKU GOGAKU. Regional meetings are also organized in Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyuushuu. The majority of its members are teaching staff engaged in Chinese language education at universities, as well as graduate students wishing to conduct research on the Chinese language. However, an increasing number of researchers in areas such as general linguistics and Japanese linguistics have joined us in recent years. In 2000, the Chinese Language Society of Japan Scholarship Award was established with the aim of training promising young researchers.
While the languages allowed to be used in CHUUGOKU GOGAKU are defined to be Japanese, Chinese and English, and the languages used at our annual meetings to be Japanese and Chinese, presentations and articles in Chinese have been increasing over the past twenty years. Because of this, and because we hope to establish stronger ties with Chinese linguistics researchers overseas, in the fiscal year 2005 we established two new membership categories: ‘overseas membership’ and ‘special editorial committee membership.’
The editorial committee, previously consisting of five domestic members, adds five overseas researchers to its members as ‘special editorial committee members.’ The membership, previously limited to people who either live or have a contact in Japan, also includes those who live overseas as ‘overseas members.’ Please read the instructions given in the site “Membership Application”and apply for membership.
Privileges of Overseas Members
Overseas members are entitled to a subscription to CHUUGOKU GOGAKU, to a membership directory, to attending and presenting at the annual meeting, and to submitting articles to CHUUGOKU GOGAKU. Overseas members, however, will not receive newsletters or any mail regarding the annual meeting, and will need to consult the Society home page for information about the Society’s activities. Overseas members also not entitled to vote (for President and Executive committee members, etc.).
